The TOFEL test is the most widely respected English-language test in the world, recognized by more than 9000 colleges, universities and agiencies in more than 130 countries, including Australia, Canada, the U.K. and the United States. Wherever you want to study, the TOFEL test can help you get there. The TOFEL test, administered via the internat, is an important part of your journey to study in an English-speaking country. In addition to the test, the ELS TOFEL Program provides tools and guides to help you prepare for the test and improve your English-language skills Who is it for? TOEFL stands for the Test of English as a Foreign Language. This exam helps to measure English proficiency for non-native speakers. Almost all colleges and universities require the TOEFL test score to evaluate a student’s English skills. Since classes in the U.S. are taught in English, colleges and universities want to assess if a student possesses the language skills to succeed in an American classroom. TOEFL is available in Nepal as an Internet Based Test (iBT). The iBT TOEFL consists of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The cost for iBT TOEFL is $165. When you register for the TOEFL, you can choose to report your scores to four colleges or universities free of cost. Please note that PBT (Paper Based Test) TOEFL is no longer available in Nepal. CBT (Computer Based Test) TOEFL has been discontinued worldwide. Who Takes the TOEFL Test? Who Accepts TOEFL Test Scores? More than 8,500 colleges, agiencies and other institutions in over 130 countries accept TOFEL scores. Where and When Can I Take the TOEFL iBT Test? The TOEFL test has more test dates (more than 50 per year) and locations (4,500 test centers in 165 countries) than any other English-language test in the world. You can retake the test as many times as you wish, but you cannot take it more than once in a 12-day period. If you already have a test appointment, you cannot register for another test date that is within 12 days of your existing appointment. The cost of the test can range from US$160 to US$250 and varies between countries. For information on registration, fees, test dates and locations, select your test location. Scores of TOFEL Your scores are based on your performance on the questions in the test. You must answer at least one question each in the Reading and Listening sections, write at least one essay, and complete at least one Speaking task to receive an official score. For the TOEFL iBT® test, administered via the Internet, you will receive four scaled section scores and a total score:

  • Reading Section (Score of: 0–30)
  • Listening Section (Score of: 0–30)
  • Speaking Section (Score of: 0–30)
  • Writing Section (Score of: 0–30)
  • Total Score (0–120)

In addition to your scores, your official score record also includes performance feedback that is a reflection of your performance level and a description of the kinds of tasks that test takers within the reported score range can typically do. There is no passing or failing TOEFL® score; individual higher education institutions and agencies set their own score requirements. TOEFL scores are valid for two years after the test date and there is no limit to the number of times you can take the test, but you cannot take it more than once in a 12-day period. Registration To find test dates, test centers and to register for the TOEFL, you need to log on to www.ets.org/toefl. There are two ways by which you can register for the test. You can mail a dollar-denominated bank draft or register online with an international credit card. The easier way to register is via online registration. If you do not have an international credit card, some local banks offer online registration services to help you make the payment using their credit card. iBT TOEFL – visit www.ets.org/toefl and create a “Profile”, meaning a user name and password to have a look at the test centers, test dates and to register. Once you create a profile and log in, you will now be able to view the test centers and register for the test. There are many test centers in Kathmandu. USEF-Nepal (also known as The Fulbright Commission) is an iBT TOEFL test center. For iBT TOEFL test takers, you can send your scores for free to four colleges or universities by designating their names from within your profile. This must be done at least one day before your test.
